Near Hebgen Lake

Webcam view of the Yellowstone Plateau and area near Hebgen Lake, a man-made impoundment of the Madison River about 12 miles from West Yellowstone, Montana. Grayling Creek enters Hebgen Lake in the northeast corner of the lake near the intersection of routes 287 and 191.

Hebgen Lake is most famous for an earthquake that occurred on August 17, 1959. The earthquake measured 7.2 and caused a huge landslide that killed 28 people and left US$11 million in damage. The landslide sent millions of cubic feet of earthen material to the canyon floor where is dammed the Madison River for weeks. A new lake was created, Earthquake Lake, before the Madison became a free-flowing river again.
